The Project of the Rehabilitation and Implementation of the Railway between Moatize and Nacala (part of the Nacala Corridor) consists of the construction of new sections of track and the rehabilitation of existing sections between Mina de Carvão in Moatize (Province of Tete) and the new Port of Nacala (Nacala Velha), crossing Mozambique, at the extremities, and Malawi, in the central area, corresponding to a total length of approximately 900 km, divided into several sections.
The technical analysis performed by REFER Engineering focused mainly on sections 2 and 3, corresponding to a new track to be built, starting in Mozambique, in the province of Tete, and ending in central Malawi, near Liwonde, where section 3 connects to the existing railway line, near the current bridge over the River Rivi Rivi.
Section 2 has a length of approximately 63 kilometres ending next to the border with Malawi in the Rift valley.
Section 3 of approximately 138 kilometres long, starts in this valley, crosses hilly relief east of it, which greatly conditions the design in plan and in profile, often in steep hillside profiles and thus forcing large earthworks and the implementation of significant Engineering Structures.
Description of Services
- Technical support in the analysis and revision of the Geology, Geotechnics and Earthworks base projects of sections 2 and 3, the Rehabilitation Project and implementation of the Railway in the Moatize-Nacala Corridor, which ended with the preparation of a report including:
- Analysis of the solutions proposed in the Base Project, in terms of technical suitability and ease of implementation;
- Proposal of improvements, with emphasis on lower cost solutions with standard techniques and which implementation depended on the least possible mobilisation of large and/or high-tech equipment.
- The technical support provided in the field of Geology, Geotechnics and Earthworks, focused on the analysis of project documentation, considering aspects such as the quantity and quality of information from the basic project phase and their implications for the development of projects and the adoption of solutions, in terms of issues associated with excavations (slope gradients and reinforcement), landfills (foundation, slope gradients and building materials), with the railway platform and the foundations adopted in special civil engineering works and rock materials for ballast and concrete.
